The Gaza "Deal": Now on to the True Threats to the Palestinian People

With Thursday’s announcement that an agreement had been reached between Hamas and Israel, Jeff responded:

My most immediate reaction from this morning's news that a "deal" had been reached between Israel and Hamas was one of relief. The genocide and destruction cease (as of now); the hostages, dead and alive, are returned; hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, seen as political prisoners by Palestinians, will be released; and humanitarian aid will “surge” into the Strip. That, as Phase 1 of the agreement, is good in and of itself.

What about Phase 2? In that part of the “deal” negotiations are to take place over a permanent ceasefire, the disarmament of Hamas, the complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, the flow of more humanitarian aid and the future governance of Gaza – plus key issues that will likely extend into Phases 3, 4, 5 and counting: Who will govern Gaza until an international stabilizing force” is created and deployed? Who will govern Gaza subsequently? Will Palestinians themselves have any meaningful role in their own governance and determining their own political future? What does “de-radicalizing” Gaza’s population mean (Points 1 & 19 of Trump’s plan)? And who will pay the estimated 45-80 billion for Gaza’s reconstruction?

These are important issues regarding Gaza, but from a wider political perspective, Gaza has lost its relevance. Israel has achieved its goal there – pacification – eliminating the last bastion of Palestinian resistance to Zionism’s 130-year campaign of Judaizing Palestine.

Jeff Halper’s October ICAHD update, released on 7^th October, focused on the second anniversary of what has become known as simply October 7th. Besides the need to keep in our minds all the innocents who were killed - 815 civilians on the Israeli side, at least 67,000 Palestinians with 83% of them civilians according to Israeli figures, and up to 200,000 if we take into account people dying of injuries, disease, malnutrition, poor living conditions, not to mention 274 journalists (264 Palestinian) and 1722 health workers - we also need to keep our political focus on what is happening.

We can't let the justified political and military reasons the Hamas operation of October 7th be reduced to mere terrorism, to an unprovoked attack, no matter how wrong it ultimately went. October 7^th did not begin on October 7^th. By the same token, Israel's campaign of pacification, destruction and genocide cannot be reduced to an act in itself. It must be seen as part-and-parcel of Israel's wider campaign of colonizing Palestine - including what Israel itself calls the Gaza-fication of the West Bank. The October 8th assault on Gaza did not begin on October 8th.

In this video, Jeff lists the major political processes at work that threaten to overshadow and bury the Palestinian struggle, including the dangers of an Israeli-dictated Gaza "peace plan" centered on the hostages, neutralizing Hamas and all Palestinian resistance and ensuring permanent Israeli control.

Supporters of Palestinian rights must not allow the October 7^th narrative to be hijacked by Israel, even as we acknowledge the crimes committed, Hamas having a responsibility to enforce discipline in any military operation. Jeff argues that we must keep a clear political and moral focus as we confront the implications of October 7^th for the Palestinian struggle.

In the recording Jeff explains how the "plan" represents nothing more than Israel getting its hostages back, walking away from its genocide and destruction and moving on to normalize Israel and its de facto annexation of the West Bank through the impending Abraham Accords.

On 1^st October, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) reported that in less than nine months, Israel had demolished more Palestinian homes and structures (1,288) in the West Bank and East Jerusalem because of not having building permits. This is more than in the whole of 2024.

More than 1,400 Palestinians were displaced and nearly 38,000 were affected through the loss of livelihood, agricultural, water and sanitation infrastructure. This marks a 39% increase in demolitions overs building permits compared with the same period last year when 929 structures were destroyed due to lack of permits.

It is further evidence of Israel’s intention to make life so difficult for the Palestinians to sustain themselves that they leave. This is why ICAHD UK has launched the Sumud Project as we stand with Palestinians to resist ethnic cleansing.

The UK government has participated in Israel’s genocide - it must stop the arms trade and its military cooperation with Israel. In addition, the government has tried to silence us and has challenged our freedom to assemble. Therefore, we must continue to raise our voices over Starmer’s complicity.

We will also use this opportunity to distribute thousands of flyers about ICAHD UK’s forthcoming annual conference on 1^st November, so we’ll need many hands that day.
