What Finally Broke Abu Hassan

After Jeff Halper recorded his August update, he prepared additional text about his message which provides more context to his heartfelt cry on the urgency of the moment. He explains that just before the recording began, he received a phone call from a friend and comrade, Abu Hassan of Beit Ummar, in which he broke down into uncontrollable sobbing.

Jeff describes Abu Hassan as a strong man, a farmer who has spent his entire life resisting, but had now reached an endpoint. He is yet another Palestinian who has had every bit of his land confiscated by Israeli authorities for settlement growth. Since 7^th October 2023, all prospects of any work for him and his sons, has disappeared and they are now reduced to facing hunger. But it was the cruelty of what the Israeli army did to his disabled daughter during another home raid is what finally broke him.

The story behind the above photo is that on 14th July 2026, the Israeli Civil Administration, accompanied by members of the Israeli army, demolished 15 residential shelters and 13 latrines in the Arab al Jahalin/Wadi Mu'nes Bedouin community near Immatin village (Qalqiliya) in Area C of the West Bank. All the structures had been provided as humanitarian assistance in 2021/2022. In addition, nine livestock shelters were demolished. Several animal feeders and water troughs were affected, while more than 10 water tanks were damaged and vandalized during the operation. Arab al Jahalin is a Bedouin community that was established over 20 years ago and was home to families who were displaced from Izariya near Jerusalem.

This demolition operation displaced thirteen families comprising 64 people and the reason given was that the community had not been issued with building permits. However, Israeli authorities rarely if ever grant building permits to Palestinians in Area C thus this is a clear demonstration of Israel’s apartheid policy when it comes to the Palestinian population in addition to the demolitions being a violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention.

Between January and July of this year, Israel demolished 1001 Palestinian homes and structures vital for living within East Jerusalem and the West Bank. It is expected that by the end of 2026, it will be a record high. Bezalel Smotrich, Israel’s Finance Minister, is behind the acceleration of demolitions as he confiscates more land to expand settlements, illegal under international law, and to prevent a future Palestinian state
